There are many ways to meditate, and everyone who seeks to relax or connect with their inner being will have a different preference. It is possible to meditate sitting down, lying down, standing, or in any variety of yoga like positions. The position you choose will depend on what you are comfortable doing and your reason for meditating.
The classic meditation technique is sitting down motionless in a quiet relaxing space. All disturbances must be eliminated for the best results. Most people envision meditation taking place while a person sits cross legged with their eyes closed. While this position is one of the more common ways to meditate, many people leave their eyes open or at least partly open. Meditating with eyes closed unless the room is very brightly lit presents a problem as the body will begin preparing for sleep and you will not be able to remain in the fully awake state meditation requires.
While the sitting position is the most commonly though of meditation technique, it can become uncomfortable if you meditate using this technique for long periods of time. Physical discomfort does not help with meditation so if you want to meditate for long periods of time, longer than the sitting method is comfortable, you will need to try a different position. The reclining technique is a position which eliminates the discomfort of sitting for long periods. Sitting slightly reclined in a chair allows meditation students to practice for long sessions without pain, numbness, or other discomfort associated with sitting on the floor for long periods.
It is important to position your body correctly to attain the best results with meditation. It is important that your body is connected and whether you sit on the floor or gently recline you should allow the soles of your feet to touch and allow your hands to connect with the center of your heart. No matter what position you use the goal of meditation is the same, to reach enlightenment and become connected to your inner self as well as the world around you.
The most basic meditation technique is to relax and let go of your thoughts, feelings and surroundings and to become one with the moment. An important part of proper meditation technique is to become an impartial observer and not only connect with yourself but with your surroundings on a basic level. It is important not to think about connecting, rather to let the sensory input from all around you flow into your consciousness without any conscious effort.
